Welcome!

The photograph above of my 2nd great-grandmother, Mrs. Mamie Harris, was taken around 1905. She is pictured here with her four children. To make a better life for her family and escape the Jim Crow South, she migrated from South Carolina and moved to Sandy Ground, a free Black settlement on Staten Island, N.Y., in 1899. She is part of my migration story. What is your migration story?

My name is Jennifer Jones, and I am a socially engaged artist; my work explores empathy and breaks down the idea of the "other." I'm creating a repository of migration stories so people can read, watch and listen to some of the reasons people leave their homes.

It should be noted that migration has not always been voluntary. It was and still is forced on millions of indigenous people of color.
